Quick answer

Concerning eating idol-food, we know an idol has no real existence and there is only one God. The pagan gods are nothing, so the meat itself is not spiritually contaminated.

Overview

Paul affirms the theological truth behind Christian liberty: idols represent no real deities, for there is only one true God. Therefore food offered to them is not intrinsically defiling. This is genuine, biblical knowledge rooted in monotheism (Deut 6:4). Yet, as the chapter unfolds, Paul will insist that this correct doctrine does not settle every practical question, because love for weaker believers must also govern conduct.
