Quick answer

Such were some of you—but you were washed, sanctified, and justified in Christ and the Spirit. It matters because it celebrates the complete transformation the gospel works in sinners.

Overview

This is one of the great gospel summaries: the Corinthians once lived in those very sins, but God washed away their guilt, set them apart as holy, and declared them righteous—all 'in the name of the Lord Jesus' and 'by the Spirit of our God.' Salvation is entirely God's gracious act, accomplished through Christ and applied by the Spirit. Their new identity, not their past, now defines them and obligates holy living.
