Quick answer

The practical atheist who lives as if there is no God is a moral fool, and such denial corrupts the whole life. It matters because rejecting God is at root a problem of the heart, not merely the intellect.

Overview

David opens by diagnosing humanity's deepest disorder: the 'fool' (Hebrew nabal, morally senseless) says in his heart there is no God, and this denial breeds corruption and abominable deeds. The point is not abstract speculation but a willful refusal to reckon with God that issues in pervasive sin. Paul quotes this psalm in Romans 3 to prove that all are under sin, preparing the way for the gospel that righteousness comes only through Christ.

Christ at the center

The Psalms are Christ's own prayer book and a gallery of his portraits — the suffering one of Psalm 22, the risen Lord of Psalm 16, the priest-king of Psalm 110, the Son to whom the nations are given.

How Psalms 14:1 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
