Quick answer

God alone is Yahweh, Creator and sustainer of heaven, earth, seas, and all their hosts. It matters because the prayer grounds confession in God's sovereign, sole deity.

Overview

The Levites' prayer begins with God as the one true Creator who made and preserves all things, and whom the heavenly host worships. This affirmation of God's uniqueness underlies all that follows: only such a God can be trusted to keep covenant and forgive. The New Testament applies creation through and for the Son (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16), so this Creator-God is revealed fully in Christ.
