Quick answer

John asks whether Jesus is truly the promised Coming One or if another should be expected. The question voices a moment of perplexity from prison.

Overview

John had boldly announced Jesus as the Messiah (John 1:29-34), yet imprisonment and Jesus' unexpected ministry may have raised honest questions. Faithful interpreters debate whether John asked for his own sake or to strengthen his disciples' faith; either way the question is sincere. Jesus' gracious answer shows His patience with struggling faith.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 11:3 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
