Quick answer

God's curse on the serpent contains the first promise of rescue: a descendant of the woman will crush the serpent, though he is wounded doing it.

Overview

Called the protoevangelium — the "first gospel." In the middle of judgment, God announces hostility between the serpent and the woman's offspring, and a decisive victory: the seed crushes the serpent's head while having his own heel struck. The whole Bible can be read as the unfolding of who this seed is — narrowing to Abraham, to David, to Christ, "that through death he might destroy… the devil" (Heb 2:14).

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.

How Genesis 3:15 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
