Quick answer

After speaking to them, the Lord Jesus is taken up into heaven and seated at God's right hand. The risen Christ is enthroned in glory.

Overview

The ascension marks Jesus' exaltation, taking his place at the right hand of God, the position of supreme authority foretold in Psalm 110:1. Seated, he reigns as Lord and intercedes for his people (Hebrews 7:25). His enthronement assures the church that its mission proceeds under the rule of the victorious Christ.

Christ at the center

Mark drives urgently to the cross, showing Jesus the Son of God as the suffering Servant who 'came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'

How Mark 16:19 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
