Quick answer

Those who live by the truth come to the light so their deeds are seen as done in God. Genuine faith welcomes the light rather than fleeing it.

Overview

In contrast to evildoers, the one who 'does the truth' gladly comes into the light, and his works are shown to have their source in God. This is not self-righteousness but the fruit of God's work within. The passage thus closes the Nicodemus discourse by tying authentic faith to a transformed life that no longer fears exposure.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 3:21 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
