Quick answer

Christ knows they are neither cold nor hot and wishes they were one or the other. It matters because spiritual lukewarmness is offensive to Christ.

Overview

Laodicea's faith is described as tepid and ineffective, neither refreshing nor healing. Drawing perhaps on the city's lukewarm water supply, Christ contrasts useful hot and cold water with their uselessness. He longs for a faith of real substance rather than complacent mediocrity.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 3:15 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
