Quick answer

Jesus tells Pilate his authority is only what God has granted, so the greater guilt lies with those who handed him over. He affirms God's sovereignty even in his trial.

Overview

Jesus acknowledges that earthly authority is real but derived, given 'from above' by God (cf. Romans 13:1). This relativizes Pilate's pride while affirming that God governs even this injustice. By saying the one who delivered him bears greater sin, Jesus distinguishes degrees of guilt: those with greater knowledge and privilege, the religious leaders, are more culpable than the pagan governor.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 19:11 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
