Quick answer

Jesus promises to ask the Father to give another Counselor to be with them forever. It introduces the abiding gift of the Holy Spirit to Christ's people.

Overview

Jesus pledges the coming of 'another Counselor' (Helper or Advocate), the Holy Spirit, who is of the same kind as Christ Himself and will dwell with believers permanently. Unlike Jesus' bodily presence soon to depart, the Spirit will remain forever. The verse opens the Gospel's rich teaching on the Spirit, assuring the church of God's continual, indwelling presence.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 14:16 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
