Quick answer

Israel multiplies dramatically, filling the land of Egypt. This fulfills God's promise of abundant offspring and triggers Egyptian fear.

Overview

The piled-up verbs (fruitful, increased, multiplied, grew mighty) deliberately echo the creation blessing of Genesis 1:28 and the promises to the patriarchs. God is keeping His word despite the death of the founders. This explosive growth, blessing though it is, provokes the hostility that drives the rest of the narrative, showing how God advances His purposes even through opposition.

Christ at the center

The Passover lamb whose blood turns away death, the exodus through the sea, the manna, the rock, and the tabernacle where God dwells with his people all foreshadow Jesus — our Passover, our redemption, the bread from heaven, and God-with-us in the flesh.
