Quick answer

God promised to bless Sarah with a son and make her a mother of nations and kings. The promised heir would come through Sarah herself.

Overview

God declares that Sarah, long barren, will bear a son and become the mother of nations and kings. This settles that Isaac, not Ishmael, is the child of promise. The promise of kings again points toward the royal line culminating in Christ. That such blessing comes to a barren old woman magnifies God's power to fulfill His word against all odds.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
