Quick answer

Crude, foolish, and coarse talk is out of place for believers; thanksgiving should fill their speech instead. Grateful words replace corrupt ones.

Overview

Paul extends the call to purity from deeds to speech, forbidding filthy, silly, and suggestive talk. In its place he sets thanksgiving, a fitting expression for those mindful of God's grace. A heart filled with gratitude to God naturally crowds out the coarse speech of the old life.

Christ at the center

Every spiritual blessing is 'in Christ,' the head over all things for the church, in whom Jew and Gentile are made one new man by his blood.
