Quick answer

Instead of mourning and removing the offender, the church remained arrogant. It matters because sin in the body should grieve us and move us to act, not be ignored.

Overview

The Corinthians' inflated pride is exposed as morally bankrupt: they should have grieved over the sin and put the unrepentant man out of fellowship. Paul links arrogance with a failure to take sin seriously. Genuine love for Christ and the offender's soul calls the church to godly sorrow and corrective discipline, not complacency.
