Quick answer

God promised that Solomon would build the temple and enjoy a father-son relationship with God, with his throne established forever. This restates the Davidic covenant.

Overview

This verse recalls God's covenant promise that He would be a father to David's son and establish his kingdom. While fulfilled in part through Solomon, the promise of an everlasting throne reaches its true fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of David. Christ is the ultimate temple-builder and the King whose reign has no end.
