Quick answer

God's words and decrees 'overtook' the fathers, who finally acknowledged that He had justly dealt with them. God's warnings always come true.

Overview

Though the prophets died, their God-given words pursued and caught up with the disobedient generation in the exile. The fathers eventually confessed God's justice, vindicating His word. This confirms that no divine warning falls to the ground and presses the present hearers to repent before judgment, trusting the same reliable God who keeps His promises in Christ.

Christ at the center

The Branch who is both priest and king, the shepherd struck and the flock scattered, the king coming humble on a donkey, the one they pierced, the fountain opened for sin — Zechariah is dense with Christ.

How Zechariah 1:6 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
