Quick answer

But believers are not in darkness, so the day will not surprise them like a thief. Those in Christ are ready for his coming.

Overview

In contrast to the unprepared, Paul assures the believers that they are "not in darkness." Because they belong to the light, the day of the Lord will not catch them off guard as it does the world. Their standing in Christ changes their relationship to that coming day from terror to hope.
