Quick answer

A loud voice announces that God now dwells with his people as their God. The ancient covenant promise of God's presence is fully realized.

Overview

This echoes the covenant refrain running through Scripture, 'I will be their God and they will be my people' (Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 31:33). The tabernacle and temple foreshadowed God dwelling among his people, fulfilled first in Christ (John 1:14) and consummated here. Unbroken fellowship with God is the heart of the new creation's joy.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 21:3 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
