Quick answer
God established an everlasting covenant to be God to Abraham and his descendants. This is the heart of the covenant: God belonging to His people.
Overview
The promise to be God to Abraham and his offspring forever expresses the core of the covenant relationship, later echoed in I will be their God and they my people. Its everlasting and generational scope assures enduring grace. This covenant bond reaches its fulfillment in Christ, through whom believers are made God's own children forever.
