Quick answer

Overwhelmed, John falls as dead, but Christ touches him and says, 'Don't be afraid; I am the first and the last.' It matters because the awesome Lord reassures and claims divine eternity.

Overview

John's collapse is the fitting response to encountering divine glory, like the prophets before him. Christ's reassuring touch and "Don't be afraid" combine majesty with tender grace. The title "the first and the last," used of Yahweh in Isaiah, affirms Christ's full deity and eternal sovereignty.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 1:17 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
