Quick answer

Because of Christ's example, believers are to work out their salvation with reverent seriousness. Salvation already given must be lived out diligently.

Overview

"Work out" does not mean earning salvation but actively living out what God has graciously begun. "Fear and trembling" denotes humble seriousness before God, not terror. Paul urges continued obedience whether or not he is present, since their walk depends on God, not on him.

Christ at the center

The one who, being in the form of God, emptied himself to the point of death on a cross and was exalted to the name above every name — the joy and prize of the believer.
