Quick answer

Israel is to give the Levites cities to dwell in, with surrounding pasturelands, out of the other tribes' inheritance. The Levites are provided for by the whole nation.

Overview

Because the Levites served at the sanctuary and had the Lord as their inheritance (Numbers 18:20), they received cities scattered among the tribes rather than a single territory. This dispersion placed teachers of God's law throughout the land. Their support by all the tribes models the principle that those who minister spiritually deserve the people's provision (1 Corinthians 9:13-14).

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
