Quick answer

Fear God, who holds eternal destinies, rather than people who can only kill the body. Right fear of God conquers the fear of man.

Overview

Jesus reorients His disciples' fears: persecutors can take physical life but not the soul, while God alone holds final judgment over both. Reverent fear of God displaces the paralyzing fear of human threats. For those in Christ this fear is not terror but awed trust, since the Judge is also their saving Father.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 10:28 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
