Quick answer

The lawyer admits the merciful one was the true neighbor, and Jesus tells him to go and do likewise. Love proven in action is the law's true aim.

Overview

Unable even to say 'the Samaritan,' the lawyer concedes that mercy defines neighborliness. Jesus commands him to live this out, not merely to discuss it. The standard remains so high that, kept honestly, it drives us to the mercy of Christ, who alone enables such love.

Christ at the center

Luke shows Jesus the Savior for all — outsiders, the poor, the nations — the one who, on the Emmaus road, opened all the Scriptures to show they were about himself.

How Luke 10:37 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
