Quick answer

Joshua is to meditate on God's law day and night and obey it, and then his way will prosper. Saturating life in Scripture is the path to true success.

Overview

This verse closely parallels Psalm 1:2-3, where the blessed person delights in and meditates on God's law. 'Prosperous' and 'good success' are defined covenantally as faithful, fruitful living under God, not material accumulation. The verse exalts the centrality of Scripture for godly leadership and life, ultimately pointing to Christ, the living Word who perfectly embodied and fulfilled the law (John 1:1; Matthew 5:17).

Christ at the center

Joshua — the same name as Jesus, 'the LORD saves' — leads God's people into their inheritance, a shadow of the greater Joshua who brings us into the true rest and the promised land that remains.

How Joshua 1:8 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
