Quick answer

God establishes a lasting covenant: His Spirit and word will remain on His people and their descendants forever. God guarantees His abiding Spirit and word to His covenant people.

Overview

The Lord pledges an enduring covenant in which His Spirit rests on His people and His words remain in their mouths through every generation, forever. This permanence of Spirit and word looks ahead to the new covenant. It is fulfilled in Christ, who gives the indwelling Spirit and the abiding word to all who belong to Him, securing them eternally.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 59:21 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
