Quick answer

The crowd asks for this bread always, much like the Samaritan woman asked for living water. They want the gift without yet grasping that the gift is Jesus Himself.

Overview

Echoing John 4:15, the people request the bread continually, still thinking in physical terms. Their words are sincere yet uncomprehending. Jesus will answer by declaring that He Himself is the bread, turning their request toward the only true satisfaction found in Him.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 6:34 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
