Quick answer
No one has ever seen God directly, but the only Son, who is closest to the Father, has made Him known. Jesus is God's perfect self-revelation.
Overview
While God in His essence is invisible, the unique Son — Himself God and intimately united with the Father — has 'declared' or explained Him to us. Many manuscripts read 'the only God,' strongly affirming Christ's deity. Jesus is therefore not merely a teacher about God but the very revelation of God, so that to see and know Him is to know the Father.
