Quick answer

A claimed faith that produces no works is useless and cannot save. Genuine saving faith inevitably shows itself in action.

Overview

James opens his famous discussion of faith and works by questioning whether a faith that bears no fruit can save anyone. He is not opposing Paul's gospel of justification by faith but exposing a counterfeit, dead profession. True faith and good works are inseparable: works do not earn salvation but demonstrate that faith is real.
