Quick answer

Because of all God has given, believers are to make every effort to add moral excellence to their faith, and knowledge to that excellence. It matters because genuine faith actively pursues godly character.

Overview

Building on God's gracious provision in verses 3-4, Peter now calls for diligent human effort. Faith is the foundation, but it is not meant to remain alone; it is to be supplied with virtue and knowledge. This begins a chain of qualities that flow out of and adorn saving faith, showing that grace and effort work together rather than against each other.
