Quick answer

The Lord who gathers Israel's outcasts promises to gather still others to them. It matters because God's saving ingathering extends beyond Israel.

Overview

God, the gatherer of scattered Israel, declares He will add 'others' to His people, broadening the scope of His redemptive work. This continues the chapter's theme of welcoming outsiders. Jesus echoes this when speaking of 'other sheep' He must bring into one flock (John 10:16), fulfilled as Gentiles are gathered through the gospel.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 56:8 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
