Quick answer

All the city's children will be taught by the LORD and enjoy great peace. It matters because God promises direct, saving instruction that produces deep well-being.

Overview

Beyond physical splendor, God promises a people personally taught by Him, resulting in abundant peace. Jesus cites this verse to describe those drawn to Him by the Father (John 6:45), and it anticipates the new covenant in which God writes His law on hearts (Jer. 31:33–34). True peace flows from being taught of God.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 54:13 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
