Quick answer

God calls those who pursue righteousness to remember their humble origins, like a rock from which they were hewn.

Overview

Those seeking the LORD are told to consider the quarry they came from, an image of their lowly beginnings and God's shaping work. Looking back to their origins should breed humility and hope in the God who made them a people. This sets up the appeal to Abraham in v.2 and points to God's power to make something great from small beginnings, as He does in the gospel.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 51:1 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
