Quick answer

Those once confused in spirit will gain understanding, and complainers will receive instruction. It matters because God promises to heal not just circumstances but the heart and mind.

Overview

The oracle ends with a promise of inward transformation: the spiritually erring will come to discernment and the murmurers will be teachable. This reverses the spiritual blindness condemned earlier in the chapter. It foreshadows the work of the Spirit, who opens hearts to understand the truth and gives a willing, instructed spirit to God's people in the new covenant.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 29:24 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
