Quick answer

Jacob blesses Joseph, invoking the God before whom Abraham and Isaac walked and who has shepherded him all his life. He confesses God's lifelong faithful care.

Overview

Jacob praises the covenant God who guided his fathers and faithfully fed him like a shepherd throughout his days. This is one of Scripture's earliest images of God as shepherd, a theme that flowers in Psalm 23 and is fulfilled in Jesus, the Good Shepherd. The blessing rests entirely on the character and faithfulness of God.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
