Quick answer

Jacob vows that if God keeps him, provides for him, and is with him, then certain commitments will follow.

Overview

Jacob makes a vow responding to God's prior promises, asking for presence, protection, and provision on his journey. Some read his "if" as bargaining, but it more likely takes hold of the very things God had just promised in verse 15. The vow shows a maturing, though still developing, faith that begins to lay hold of God's word.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
