Quick answer

Jacob promises that the pillar will be God's house and that he will give a tenth of all God gives him.

Overview

Jacob commits to ongoing worship at Bethel and to giving a tithe in grateful acknowledgment that all he has comes from God. His pledge of a tenth echoes Abraham's tithe to Melchizedek and reflects a heart that returns to God a portion of his gifts. The vow displays gratitude and dependence as the proper response to grace.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
