Quick answer

God tells the woman that sin will bring pain in childbearing and conflict into the marriage relationship. It shows how sin distorts even God's good gifts of family and partnership.

Overview

As part of the consequences of the fall, God announces increased pain in childbirth and a strained relationship in which her desire and his rule are now in tension. This is not God's original design but a description of how sin disorders human relationships. The promised seed of verse 15, however, will come through this very childbearing, pointing ahead to Christ, born of a woman to undo the curse.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
