Quick answer

Filled with fear, Jacob declares the place to be the house of God and the gate of heaven.

Overview

Jacob responds to the vision with holy fear, recognizing the spot as a meeting point between heaven and earth. "The gate of heaven" expresses his sense that here heaven has opened toward him. This reverent dread is the fitting response of a sinner who has glimpsed the living God's presence and promise.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
