Quick answer

God halts Abraham, declaring that now He knows Abraham fears Him, since he did not withhold his only son. Abraham's faith is fully proven by his obedience.

Overview

God stops the sacrifice and commends Abraham's God-fearing obedience, demonstrated by his willingness to surrender his beloved son. The phrase 'your only son' echoes the Father who 'did not spare his own Son,' making this the Bible's great picture of substitutionary love. Where Abraham was spared the loss of his son, God the Father gave His Son for us, the reality this entire scene foreshadows.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
