Quick answer

Yahweh appeared and promised the land to Abram's offspring, so Abram built an altar. God confirms the promise and Abram responds in worship.

Overview

This first recorded appearance of Yahweh to Abram in Canaan adds the gift of the land to the earlier promises. Abram's altar marks worship and claims the land for the Lord by faith. The promise to his 'offspring' (seed) ultimately finds its focus in Christ, through whom the inheritance is secured (Gal 3:16).

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
