Quick answer

Choosing life means loving, obeying, and clinging to God, who is their very life. God himself is the life and security of his people.

Overview

Moses defines the chosen life as loving, obeying, and holding fast to the Lord, 'for he is your life, and the length of your days.' True life is found not merely in blessings but in God himself. This points to Christ, who declares himself the life, so that to cling to him is to possess life eternal in the land of promise to come.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).

How Deuteronomy 30:20 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
