Quick answer
Therefore God handed Samaria over to her Assyrian lovers, the very ones she doted on. Her chosen allies became the instruments of her judgment.
Overview
In fitting judgment, God gave Samaria into the hand of Assyria, fulfilled in the fall of the northern kingdom in 722 B.C. The lovers she pursued became her destroyers. The verse shows the principle that sinful attachments often turn to bring about one's own ruin.
