Quick answer

Paul bursts into praise that God has blessed believers with every spiritual blessing in Christ. It sets the keynote of worship and the theme of union with Christ.

Overview

This verse begins a long sentence of praise (often called the 'eulogy') celebrating the Triune God's saving work. 'Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places' means the full riches of salvation, secured now though enjoyed fully in the age to come. The repeated phrase 'in Christ' shows that all these blessings flow to us only through union with the Son.

Christ at the center

Every spiritual blessing is 'in Christ,' the head over all things for the church, in whom Jew and Gentile are made one new man by his blood.

How Ephesians 1:3 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
