Quick answer

If they return to God and obey wholeheartedly, restoration follows. Genuine, heartfelt repentance is the way back to God.

Overview

Moses describes the turning point: returning to the Lord and obeying 'with all your heart, and with all your soul.' True repentance is whole-souled, not merely outward. This call to wholehearted return runs throughout Scripture and is answered in the gospel, where God grants both the repentance and the new heart that enable such return.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
