Quick answer

Child sacrifice, divination, and sorcery are absolutely forbidden among God's people. Israel must not seek hidden knowledge or power apart from God.

Overview

This verse lists detestable occult and pagan practices, beginning with the horror of passing a child through the fire and including various forms of divination and sorcery. Such acts sought guidance or control from sources other than the living God. God provides His people true revelation through His word and prophets, so they need not turn to forbidden, demonic channels.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
