Quick answer

Because Jesus died and rose, God will bring the believing dead back with him. Christ's resurrection guarantees the believer's own.

Overview

Paul grounds the hope of v. 13 in the gospel itself: Jesus "died and rose again." Because of this, God will bring with Jesus "those who have fallen asleep in Jesus." The death and resurrection of Christ is the foundation and pattern of the believer's hope beyond the grave.
