Quick answer

Then living believers will be caught up with the risen dead to meet the Lord, and be with him forever. The great hope is unbroken fellowship with Christ.

Overview

After the dead are raised, living believers will be "caught up" with them to meet the Lord. The phrase "meet the Lord" pictures going out to welcome an arriving king, and faithful Christians hold differing views on the surrounding details. Whatever the particulars, the climactic promise is unmistakable: "we will be with the Lord forever," the heart of Christian hope.

Christ at the center

The believer waits for God's Son from heaven, Jesus who delivers from the wrath to come and who will return to gather his people to himself.

How 1 Thessalonians 4:17 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.

How traditions read this

When the church is caught up, relative to the tribulation.

Pre-tribulation rapture

Christ comes first secretly for his church, catching it up before a future seven-year tribulation, then returns visibly with it at the end. Distinguishes the rapture from the Second Coming. The dispensational position.

Key points · Rapture before the tribulation; distinct from the Second Coming; "Christ for" then "with" the church.

J. N. Darby; Tim LaHaye; Hal Lindsey

Post-tribulation rapture

The "catching up" happens at the one visible Second Coming, at the end of the tribulation; the church is kept through, not removed from, that time of trial. The historic premillennial position.

Key points · One coming, at the end; church endures the tribulation; rapture = the Second Coming.

George E. Ladd; Douglas Moo; John Piper

Mid-tribulation rapture

The church is caught up at the midpoint of the seven years, after initial troubles but before the climactic outpouring of divine wrath.

Key points · Rapture at the midpoint; before the worst wrath; a mediating view.

Harold Ockenga; J. Oliver Buswell

Pre-wrath rapture

The rapture comes late in the tribulation — after great persecution but immediately before the "day of the Lord" wrath falls — so the church sees much tribulation but is spared God''s wrath.

Key points · Rapture after persecution, before wrath; late in the seven years.

Marvin Rosenthal; Robert Van Kampen
