Quick answer

The Thessalonians imitated Paul and the Lord, welcoming the word with Spirit-given joy despite suffering. Affliction did not crush them because the Spirit gave them gladness.

Overview

Conversion made them imitators of their teachers and ultimately of Christ himself, who also embraced suffering. They received the word in much affliction yet "with joy of the Holy Spirit," a paradox that marks genuine faith. This joy amid trial echoes Jesus' pattern and is a fruit the Spirit produces, not something manufactured by circumstance.
